Valparaiso City Survey 2005
The purpose of this study was to assess the opinions of Valparaiso residents on a series of issues concerning the quality of life in Valparaiso. To accomplish these goals, research associates from the Community Research and Service Center (CRSC) and representatives from the city administration developed a questionnaire, which is included in the Appendix of this report available for download in PDF format at the bottom of the page. This questionnaire consists of the following:
Twenty-six statements about the quality of life in the City. Respondents were asked to agree or disagree with each statement.
A list of twenty-two services or conditions in the City. Respondents were asked to evaluate each one.
A list of nineteen projects or issues. Respondents were asked if they would support an increase in taxes to support each.
Four questions about acts of discrimination in the City.
Three open-ended questions asking residents to list what they like best about the City, what they consider to be problems and unmet needs, and what they consider to be the worse traffic areas in the City.
Several other questions that provide demographic about survey respondents.
A systematic random sample was drawn of of 2.119 households in the City of Valparaiso. Because apartment dwellers usually respond to mailed surveys at a much lower rate, an additional 288 apartment households were included in the sample. This procedure resulted in a final sample of 2,407 households in the City that were sent a copy of the questionnaire, a cover letter and a stamped self-addressed return envelope.
The instructions requested that the questionnaire be completed by one, adult-family member. All persons were guaranteed anonymity, and no record was kept of which addresses did or did not respond. Moreover, no follow- up mailing was conducted. The mailing took place in late November and early December 2004. A response rate of 23.8% was obtained from the questionnaires actually delivered. Of the questionnaires, 12.87% were not delivered because the houses were either vacant or the addresses were inaccurate.
