Undergraduate Research

The Department believes in creating active learning environments for our students.  While this belief frequently finds expression in laboratory components and other projects in courses, it is most fully expressed through the opportunities that we provide students to participate in undergraduate research projects.

There are two distinct opportunities to participate in undergraduate research within the department.  The first is through academic year research and the second through the National Science Foundation funded summer research program (VERUM).  Each of these programs are described in detail on their own pages.

Regardless of which program a student might participate in, the goal is to provide students with learning experiences that approximate what a professional mathematician or computer scientist does.  Namely, students learn to conjecture, to prove, to write, and to speak about their original work.
