DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES

The Department has seven scholarships, prizes, and awards available for students.  Keeping with the Department's philosophy of the central integrative role of the mathematical and computing sciences, these scholarships, prizes, and awards are available for a variety of students, can be obtained in a variety of ways, and recognize achievement in multiple areas.  For example, the Howard Kibble Hughes Prize is a $1,000 cash prize awarded to the student having the highest score on an exam covering topics in the first four semesters of study.  The exam is open to all students on campus and is offered every spring.

On the other extreme of timing and opportunity is the Nancy Wehmeier & Robert B. Nagel Prize, which is a cash prize of approximatrely $1,500.00 presented to the graduating senior female mathematics major.  It is presented to these young women shortly after they graduate in the spring.  Imagine the excitement of receiving a check the summer after graduation!

Three other  scholarhip opportunities available to rising junior and senior mathematics and computer science majors are the Martin David Mundt Scholarship, the Kermit H. Carlson Scholarship, and the Louis A. Foster Scholarship.  Each of these $1,000.00 scholarships are presented by the faculty to students who have been recognized for outstanding achievements in their work in mathematics or computer science.

The two other $1,000.00 scholarships recognize student excellence in areas that reflect the University's and the Department's values.  The Harold & Elizabeth Denig Scholarship recognizes a rising junior or senior mathematics major who, through their actions, also demonstrates commitment to the Christian beliefs of the University.  The Arthur E. Hallerberg Scholarship recognizes an outstanding future teacher of mathematics.
