Faculty Lending Policy

The Circulation Policy is designed to provide maximum use of the University's collection, while simultaneously insuring its availability for all current and future generations of students and faculty. Checking IDs and requiring loan renewals and returns help to prevent loss. Faculty must present their barcoded ID at the Circulation Desk to borrow materials.

Recalls

Books, videos, CDs, or LPs needed for class reserves may be recalled at any time, and must remain on reserve. Items for other borrowers may be recalled after a one or two week loan.

If an item is recalled, a notice is sent indicating the new due date, which is usually seven days after the date of the notice. If a second notice is required, the borrower will be fined $1 per day until the book is returned. Borrowers who are absent from campus for an extended period must make arrangements for someone to receive library notices and return recalled books. Recalled items may not be renewed, but the user returning the items may place another recall on them, thus limiting the new borrower to a two-week loan. Reserve materials may not be recalled. Recalls can be placed remotely through GALILEO or by filling out a request form (pink slip) at the Circulation Desk.

Returns

Return books to the book drops at the Christopher Center Circulation Desk. Hand Reserve materials to a Circulation Desk attendant for prompt check-in. Do not put them in the slot or leave them on the Desk counter. If Christopher Center is closed, return books and overnight Reserves to one of the overnight book drops, located outside the first floor entrance on the east (Chapel) side or by the staff entrance on the southwest (Union) side.

Return LPs, CDs, CD-ROMs, videotapes, and audiotapes only when Christopher Center is open, handing them to an attendant in the Media Services area or at the Circulation Desk. Never put them in the overnight book drops.

Media Library equipment on loan should be returned to the Media Services area during the hours it is open.

Overdues and Lost Materials

Faculty are expected to reimburse the library for lost materials.

Books: One reminder is sent when books approach their due date, to allow the borrower to renew electronically. After the due date, additional reminders to renew items will be sent. If books are not renewed or returned after reminders are sent, the borrower will be billed for the replacement cost, including commercial binding, plus a $5 processing fee. Charges will be waived when items are returned.

Videotapes, CDs, LPs, and Non-Musical Audiotapes: Only one reminder will be sent when the item is overdue. After seven days, a bill will be sent for the replacement cost of the item, plus a $5 processing fee.
