Affiliated Borrowers Lending Policy

Eligibility: People who are not Valparaiso University students, faculty, or staff may apply for a library card. Proof of address is required. Persons under the age of 18 must also provide a parent's signature on the application.

Cost: $20/year for a family card (one or two parents and minor children); $15/year for an individual card; $2/year for VU alumni; free to spouses and minor children of current VU faculty and staff with their courtesy card; free to students, faculty and staff from other Indiana universities with an ALI borrower's card.

Identification: Affiliated borrowers must present their VU library cards to check out materials.

Loan Period: Books and government documents: 28 days, or the expiration date of your card, whichever comes first. LPs, CDs, and circulating audio tapes: 2 weeks. A maximum of 20 items may be checked out at once. Journals, regardless of age, cannot be checked out, but can be photocopied in-house.

Renewals: One remote electronic renewal through GALILEO is allowed for books that are not overdue. Items must be presented at the library for other renewals. We are unable to accept requests for renewals by telephone or by letter.

Recalls: Items may be recalled at any time if needed by VU students or faculty. If a book is recalled, you will receive a notice indicating the new due date, usually seven days after the date of the notice. If a second notice is required, you will be fined $1/day per book.

Lost Items: After the third overdue notice, the library will assume that the book is lost and bill you for the replacement cost of the book, plus a $5.00 service charge. Borrowers who fail to return books or to pay charges will have their borrowing privileges blocked.

Returns: Books may be returned to the overnight book drops when the Christopher Center is closed. LPs, CDs, and tapes should be returned to the Media Services area or should be given to an attendant at the Circulation Desk.

Limitations: Affiliated borrowers are not permitted access to certain university computer services, interlibrary loans, or recall privileges. They cannot borrow reserve or reference materials, periodicals, rare books, maps, videos, or DVDs.
