As a student at Valparaiso University School of Law you will be encouraged to view law as a calling, to become not just an influential lawyer and leader, but one who uses your influence for service and for good. You will also develop a demonstrable aptitude in enduring core competencies, with thorough training in the foundational concepts of legal history, theory and practice. You will be equipped with advanced skill in legal research and writing – the skill set that hiring partners rank as most important when evaluating prospective associates. Through the truly personal teaching and learning that Valparaiso Law faculty provide, your law school experience will be distinguished by a focus on you and your education. In sum,the Valparaiso Law difference is best described by these four traits.
The desirable applicant – a high achiever in academics and in life
We seek to enroll students who demonstrate a consistently high level of academic achievement as evidenced first by their undergraduate GPA and, secondly, by a competitive LSAT score. We firmly believe a consistent record of academic achievement, measured by GPA, is a critical measurement for success not just in law school, but in the legal profession. Also key to success is a student's record of service and extra-academic experiences. We look closely at applicants' resumes, their personal statements, and letters of recommendation. Our holistic admissions review ensures that every applicant's full record of achievement is seriously considered.
Our Commitment to Diversity
Valparaiso University School of Law is committed to enrolling a student body that reflects a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and points of view, thereby contributing to the diversity of the Law School community and the University. Among other goals, the Law School seeks to educate students to serve the needs of society, to advance the cultural discourse, and overall, to enhance the cultural competency of the School and its constituents. Our commitment to equality calls for a holistic admissions process that considers race, ethnicity, gender, religious background, veteran status, and socio-economic status, along with other factors.
The School of Law participates in and supports the Law School Admission Council's diversity initiatives. LSAC developed the DiscoverLaw.org campaign to encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law and choose a path in undergraduate school to help them succeed. Every year Valparaiso Law offers programs to support DiscoverLaw.
