Education:

Law Enforcement Academy Graduate or equivalent law enforcement experience. Minimum of a high school education.

Experience/Skills:

  • Law Enforcement Academy Graduate or equivalent law enforcement experience.
  • Minimum of a high school education.
  • Ability to maintain a mental capacity to continue ongoing training and expand one's skill level which allows the capability to exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful/dangerous circumstances.
  • Evaluate various options which could include life and death decisions.
  • Ability to effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to armed/dangerous persons, dangerous animals, communicable disease, hazards of emergency driving, natural and man-made disasters.

Job Summary:

To support the mission of the Valparaiso University and Valparaiso University Police Department by proactive patrolling of the campus to ensure the safety, security, well being, and retention of the university's students, staff, guests and property.

  • Perform proactive patrol for the Valparaiso University by vehicle, foot, and bicycle. Detect criminal activity, traffic violations, and enforce federal, state, and university parking rules, and regulation.
  • Respond to emergency calls of service, which include fire, medical, suspicious persons, assaults, alarms, break-ins, thefts, alcohol, and drug activates. Perform investigations, interviews of victims, witnesses, and offenders.
  • Respond to non-emergency calls of service such as lock-outs, student transports, reports of criminal activity not in progress.
  • Prepare written incident and accident/crash reports.
  • Assist and support the Chief, Assistant Chief, and Detective Sergeant in daily activities.
  • Daily supervision of the Student Escort Services and dispatch.
