Requirements

Education:

Bachelor's degree required in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or related technical field

Experience/Skills:

  • Five years of demonstrated experience, combining both education and or on-the-job experience, with networking technologies and practices in a campus LAN environment.
  • Working knowledge of computer and network security principles and their implementation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of networking technologies with an emphasis in TCP/IP and Internet protocols.
  • Knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection/protection systems, network access control, and other systems used for monitoring, control and management.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards and conventions for both in-building and outside cable plants.
  • Experience in verbal and written presentations, and problem solving activities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, a willingness to work during off hours maintenance and be on call 24x7.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Network Services, the Senior Network Administrator is responsible for all activities relating to the network infrastructure and architecture, including the design, installation, configuration and maintenance of voice, data and video networks, switch and router management, network management tools, security and disaster recovery.

Responsibilities include a variety of complex tasks involved with the architecture, design, installation, and administration of Valparaiso University's networks as well as the established of comprehensive, high-quality, well documented procedures for managing those networks. 

  • Plan, architect and  engineer network systems and develop network standards for a large multi-building campus environment.
  • Perform capacity and resource planning to evaluate existing systems and plan for new or expanded network systems.
  • Install, configure and manage multi-vendor network switches, routers, access servers and wireless access points.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and repair network systems in a 24x7 operating environment.
  • Establish and maintain network security standards and guidelines.
  • Advise the Director of Network Services concerning needs in your area of responsibility; participate in creating long-and short-range plans for your unit consistent with the University and IT strategic plans.
  • As assigned, consult with Deans, Directors, Department Chairs, and other University officials regarding their networking needs; and advance these needs to the IT strategic and tactical planning processes.
  • Be prepared and willing to accept "on call" duty as assigned, and when on call, to respond to system failures and crises on short notice at any time of the day or night, and be able to correct most failures unassisted.
  • Participate in regular professional development activities to refresh skills and understanding so as to be able to share and educate campus constituents on the latest practices and understandings.
  • Recommend hiring, evaluate, schedule, train, and supervise the network staff and student workers.
