Traditional, on-campus residence hall housing is currently not the Graduate School’s recommendation for graduate students. There are many other options available to graduate students that are very close to campus, provide an opportunity to live with other graduate students, and are comparable (if not cheaper) in price. 

 Uptown East Apartments

One option we highly recommend is Uptown East Apartments, especially for international students.  Their website can be found at:http://www.theuptowneast.com/

 Uptown East is a private company, but with connections to the university.  Located across the street from campus (you can easily walk to campus from the apartments), they are as close to campus as you can get.  They provide a social, community environment much like you would experience in the on-campus residence halls, but with more privacy and higher-end facilities and amenities.

 Uptown East Apartments offer:

• Fully furnished apartments including leather furniture, private washer and dryer, wireless internet, 42" flat screen TV, bedroom suites with private bathrooms and walk-in closets, and large, open kitchens with granite countertops. 
• A community building with a 24 hour fitness center, movie theater, private study lounges, outdoor patio, meeting rooms, computer lab, and a fireplace living room.  

All utilities are included in the rent.  Apartments are leased by the suite (bedroom with bathroom), so you are only responsible for your portion of the rent.  Uptown East will match you with a roommate (and will match you with a graduate student to the best of their ability if you request so), or you may choose your own.  Private, one-person apartments are also available.

In addition to one and two bedroom apartments listed on their website, Uptown East offers a special shared bedroom rate for graduate students only:

Two bedroom/two bath apartment for 4 people:  $375 per person per month.  Each bedroom has a bunk bed and holds two people per room.  Uptown East can match you with roommates.

 Other Off-Campus Apartments

The Graduate School also maintains a list of other off-campus apartments.  These are not as close to campus as Uptown East, but a public bus (the V-Line) provides transportation throughout Valparaiso for $1 a ride.  Most apartments are within a 5 minute drive to campus.  Rent typically ranges from about $400 per month for a studio apartment to $850 per month for a two bedroom apartment.  Prices and amenities differ for various apartments, but most are not furnished and many do not include utilities (utilities typically range from about $100 to $400 per month depending on the season and size of the apartment).
